Zoom Privacy and Security

Zoom has received a lot of media attention over the past few weeks due to its sudden surge in popularity. It is important to note that TCNJ has a service contract with Zoom, which makes our Zoom instance significantly different than the free version. Zoom has quickly pushed out updates to address reported vulnerabilities, usually within 24 hours, which is a really great turnaround time. Many vendors take months to address vulnerabilities. They have also updated their policies to be more transparent and succinct.

The biggest issue with Zoom meetings is so called “Zoombombing” where uninvited guests interrupt the meeting, usually with inappropriate content.  We have taken steps to ensure that the default settings for our meetings are secure. Additional settings can be enforced to only allow TCNJ accounts to join the meeting, and to prevent participants from sharing their screens.

Here are some additional resources on setting up a Zoom meeting

Update your zoom software.

As with any software, it is important to regularly apply security updates to your Zoom client. Zoom automatically checks for updates when it is launched. You can also manually check for updates by clicking on your profile picture and then selecting  ‘Check for Updates’

If you have any questions or concerns about using Zoom please contact the IT Help Desk helpdesk@tcnj.edu or the Information Security Office itsecurity@tcnj.edu
